Sally Chinea

Sally Chinea

Sculpture: Milli-nery

Sally’s artistic practice explores boundaries and preconceptions, in particular distinctions between craft and fine art and gender stereotyping. She manipulates and re-contextualizes a wide variety of mundane, found and discarded materials to create a dichotomy between something which is worthless and something that is valued She has a love for working on community art projects, leading workshops and generally teaching others the many skills she has learnt!

Sally has a love of traditional and heritage crafts and her sculpture is a celebration of the endangered skill of the hat maker, in particular the transformation of straw from the field into hats. Her design was inspired by a recent trip to Luton to revisit the heart of the hat making industry in England, Luton’s Hat trails and museum collections.
